Epic Win or Epic Fail – The New e.l.f. Aqua Beauty Mousse Foundation

“Infused with Purified Water, Coconut Oil, and Vitamin E, the silky formula glides on and provides sheer-to-medium coverage.” – The e.l.f. cosmetics website

Today’s post is on the new e.l.f. foundation that is part of their Aqua Beauty line. This is the 2nd foundation of theirs that I’ve tried. The first one was the Acne Fighting Foundation. I meant to have this post up sooner, but I was feeling under the weather this past weekend. I am doing much better now though. Did anyone else get hit with snow this weekend? We sure did here in Michigan. I think we got at least 7 or 8 inches. I have a feeling it’s going to be quite a snowy winter! Anyhow, Let’s get onto the review…

The packaging is a blue-green squeeze tube with a cap that screws on and off. I’m thinking the stripe around it is transparent so that you can see the exact shade. It’s 0.96 fl oz. and can be purchased on the e.l.f cosmetics website for $6.

e.l.f claims this foundation is hydrating, and it’s supposed to give your complexion a radiant and dewy looking finish. I have to disagree with that claim. I felt like it had more of a matte finish, and it really clung to my dry patches. I find it really funny that on their website in the how to use section, their beauty tip for this foundation suggests that you mix in a few of of their dewy drops. You really shouldn’t have to if this foundation is supposed to give you a dewy finish. Am I right?

I have the shade Fair/Light, and it seems like it might be just a tad bit too dark for my complexion. It also appears to have more of a yellow-tone. Though when I add my setting powder and some bronzer, the shade seems to work all right. If you’re lighter than me though, then I don’t think this foundation will work for you shade-wise. They also have the shades: Light/Medium, Medium/Dark, and Dark/Deep. That is not very much to choose from. I feel like e.l.f. really needs to work on shades for those that have a really light skin tone as well as those that have darker skin tones. On Instagram, there seems to be a lot of complaints about their shade selection, and I don’t blame them.

This foundation is supposed to be a sheer to medium coverage. You’re supposed to be able to build it up to a medium coverage. If I hadn’t been so impulsive in ordering this foundation and read more about it, I probably wouldn’t have ordered it. I didn’t realize the coverage would be so light. The first time I put it on, I was like “where did it go?” I really couldn’t build up the coverage. I used my Real Techniques sponge to apply it to my face. I did try to use a brush and my fingers as well. I felt like the RT sponge worked best for me because it seemed to blend out better that way. This foundation does dry and set pretty fast.

Even though I don’t really care for it much right now, I will come back to it in the summer when there is more humidity in the air. If you have dry skin or any dry patches, I don’t think you will like this. If you have oily skin, then you might like it. This foundation also caked up in the creases underneath my eyes. It didn’t seem to work too well with my Tarte Shape Tape Concealer. For me, this foundation was an “Epic Fail.” Keep in mind though that different products work differently for different people. I really love the e.l.f. brand and there are a lot of products of theirs that I do love.

Well that about wraps it up! Has anyone tried this foundation? What are some of your favorite e.l.f. products? Let me know in the comments below. I would love to hear from you, even if it’s just to say hello. I hope you’re having a great week!

  1. Awesome post as always hun. And yes so hate when a product claims something they don’t deliver. Such a let down. I kinda did a research online and bought Nars luminous foundation in Stromboli that is supposed to work with MAC NC40 tones but it seems a tad too yellow for me even though I have yellow undertones. Gah lol

  2. My skin is definitely on the drier side during the cold bleak winter although you’re right it looks very light and sheer, definitely something that may be good in the summer months when you already have a slight glow to your skin! I never really think to use ELF products, but I do use their brushes and liquid liner which I love!!

    1. I love those products too! They have great lipstick and the Illuminating palette is a favorite as well. šŸ˜Š I will try it again in the summer when it’s humid lol. Thanks for stopping by and reading! I’m hoping to catch up on reading posts this weekend. ā¤ xo

  3. Hmm, it doesn’t sound great at all! I typically avoid ELF foundations though because of their limited shade range. The finish sounds really nice (if there was a shade match for us ghostly people) but I agree why should you have to add dewy drops if it’s supposed to be hydrating!? I hope it will work better for you in the summer šŸ˜€

    1. Yeah I don’t know why I bother with Elf foundations lol. They’re never light enough. I will try it again in the summer. Thank you for stopping by! šŸ˜Š I just did a post on the J.cat Beauty Compact Cushion Foundation, and it’s my new favorite! šŸ˜

  4. I would have associated mousse foundation formula to be more like medium to full coverage. Too bad it’s not what you wanted it to be – yes, it could be good for Summer months. The tube packaging is pretty handy though!
